Quilt made by Harriet Powers in 1885
Initial notes on the Essay writing process, starting to play around with ideas and areas of interest in order to start forming a line of enquiry.
My initial area of interest was folk art and it's role in reflecting the everyday lived experiences of the 'working class' people of the time as opposed to the fine art of the era which was only a representation of an elite class, experiences reserved only for the privileged minority.
However- knowing that folk art is a vast area of study and wanting to steer away from an historical narrative I was drawn to the study of folk art quilts finding them very beautiful and interesting works of art.
The highly personal and narrative qualities of quilts makes them a rich source of information- there is lots a quilt can tell you besides looking decorative.
